In today’s bustling tech landscape, Aveneel Waadhwa, a Product Manager at Microsoft on the Azure Optimization team, stands out with his future-forward, innovative, entrepreneurial spirit and global perspective.

Born and raised in New Delhi, India, Waadhwa embarked on a journey that spanned continents and diverse educational and professional terrains. His path, shaped by a deep-rooted passion for technology and a commitment to fostering community, epitomizes the modern product manager: adaptive, forward-thinking, and driven by a vision to impact the world through innovation.

Waadhwa earned his bachelor’s in Data Science & Economics from UC Berkeley and gained experience at multiple startups before joining Microsoft. At Microsoft, his impact has been significant, helping the company save millions of dollars to accelerate innovation and launching a custom GPT and plugin for Microsoft Copilot from the ground up.

Beyond his corporate role, Waadhwa is deeply committed to making a difference. He won the “Hack for Good” category at the 2021 Microsoft Hackathon, benefiting Amrita-Seattle, a charity supporting at-risk children worldwide. His team built a robust website that expanded the charity’s reach and positively impacted children’s lives. Additionally, he co-founded Aspiring Product Manager, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping aspiring product managers break into the tech industry through mentorship, guidance, and job application feedback.

In an exclusive interview, The Urban Watch sat down with Aveneel Waadhwa to delve into his career journey, the transformative impact of AI in product management, and his vision for the future of tech entrepreneurship.

Tell me a little bit about your background and where you grew up.

I grew up in New Delhi, India, and moved to the US at 18 to attend the University of California, Berkeley. I double majored in Data Science and Economics, graduating in 2021. I’ve worked at Microsoft for three years and interned as a product manager at three different startups during college.

Were you always drawn to numbers and interested in working in this field?

My interest in numbers and data science developed over time. Initially, my interests were all over the place—I enjoyed art and history, studied Spanish for a year in college, and even took some film classes. However, my data science class became my favorite, and I also enjoyed the psychology aspect of economics—understanding how people think and make decisions.

Tell me about your life in New Delhi. Were your parents entrepreneurs?

Growing up in New Delhi was a unique experience. I was diagnosed with leukemia at age 2 and battled it until I was 7. Fortunately, my parents and grandparents, who are all doctors, identified it early. My older brother also pursued an engineering degree, which had a significant influence on me. While my parents weren’t entrepreneurs, their dedication and work ethic inspired me to start something of my own one day.

What has been the most significant personal challenge you’ve ever faced?

Navigating the United States with uncertainty and anxiety as an immigrant has been my biggest personal challenge. Moving to a new country as a teenager and being an international student meant starting my network from scratch. Entering the job market for the first time as an immigrant was also a significant hurdle.

You’ve lived in the U.S., UK, India, Portugal. How has this multicultural experience influenced who you are today and how you approach professionalism?

Living in diverse cultures has made me open-minded, inclusive, and understanding of different work styles. It has helped me embrace various professional approaches and ways of thinking from people around the world. Empathy and good communication are essential skills for product managers, and my multicultural experiences have enabled me to develop these skills.

I interned in the UK one summer, where I reconnected with family and worked for a startup. I also completed a rigorous startup training program at the European Innovation Academy in Lisbon, Portugal, where I met professionals from various fields, including marketing and design. In this program, we formed teams of five and started a company in three weeks. It was an exciting experience as I had always wanted to create my own company and build something from the ground up.

At the Academy, we worked from 8 a.m. until late at night, culminating in pitching our projects to investors. My team created a travel app that generates real-time itineraries based on user preferences, such as soccer, jazz, or Spanish food. The app optimizes these preferences to provide sample itineraries.

This experience improved my communication skills and made me a better product manager by combining people skills with technical expertise. It also sparked my love for travel; I’ve now visited 43 countries.

Based on this experience, I was hired while still in college to work on another travel app called Welcome, which was acquired last year.

How did your career path lead you to become a product manager at Microsoft?

I have always been passionate about innovation and entrepreneurship. I asked my professors how I could become an entrepreneur and founder. I learned that being a product manager was the perfect role for this. As a product manager, you create a roadmap, work with engineers, design products, and oversee their launch. You also collaborate with marketing and advertising teams. The opportunity to wear many hats excited me, and I knew it would prepare me for success as a founder.

During my senior year of college in 2020, I applied to and interviewed with many big tech companies. The job market was very challenging due to COVID-19, but I networked extensively to get referrals, participated in mock interviews, and prepared thoroughly for my applications. In Fall 2020, one semester before graduation, I was able to land a job offer from Microsoft.

Could you elaborate on the importance of launching a custom GPT and plugin for Microsoft Copilot?

I’m most proud of developing the custom GPT and FinOps (financial operations) plugin that I launched for Copilot, Microsoft’s AI companion. I led this product from ideation to execution, guiding it from concept to launch. Integrating with Azure enabled users to efficiently access and edit financial data directly within Microsoft Teams, eliminating the learning curve associated with navigating new financial portals and saving considerable time for internal users.

What are the advantages of Copilot? How does it differ from ChatGPT?

Copilot serves as an AI assistant embedded in various Microsoft products such as Windows, Office 365, Teams, and Excel. Unlike ChatGPT, which primarily responds to queries, Copilot acts as a proactive assistant. It can analyze documents, draft emails, and even create PowerPoint presentations. This integration into daily workflow tools enhances productivity by automating routine tasks and providing contextual assistance beyond simple question-answer interactions.

What was the process like for launching a custom plugin?

The project began during the hackathon week in September 2023 and took approximately eight months to complete from ideation to general availability launch. Microsoft’s annual hackathon provides employees with the opportunity to work on innovative projects of their choice for a week. Inspired by the success of large language models like ChatGPT, I proposed the idea during the hackathon, received approval, and successfully implemented it by the end of the semester.

What are some of the biggest challenges you face as a product manager?

As a product manager, one of the biggest challenges I face is navigating ambiguity and uncertainty while planning for the future and developing products. Often, there’s a significant information gap when entering new markets or exploring unfamiliar territories. Effectively estimating impact and resource allocation is crucial in this role, alongside the need to quickly adapt to shifting priorities and market dynamics.

Tell me about some of your most significant accomplishments.

Besides launching the Copilot plugin, my most significant accomplishment is helping my organization at Microsoft save millions of dollars. My focus has been on optimizing Azure resources through app development and product launches that facilitate cost savings for our customers. Identifying and implementing these cost-saving initiatives across various areas within a large company can have a profound impact. It not only justifies our efforts but also frees up resources that can fund innovative projects, particularly in AI, which may need more initial funding at the start of the fiscal year. This funding accelerates innovation and product development.

Another accomplishment I’m really proud of is winning the Microsoft Global Hackathon in the “Hack for Good” category back in 2021. Our project supported Amrita-Seattle, a charity that serves at-risk children and youth globally, providing nutrition, education, healthcare, and clean water solutions in the U.S., India, and Nepal. Within a week, we developed a comprehensive website for the charity to facilitate donations. I maintained ongoing communication with the charity and later presented our work to Microsoft’s leadership team, showcasing the impact of our efforts.

You’re also a co-founder of Aspiring Product Manager, helping aspiring product managers break into tech. Tell me more about the organization, your role there, and some key advice for aspiring product managers.

I co-founded Aspiring Product Manager with two friends who are PMs at Coinbase, aiming to support aspiring product managers, especially college students, in breaking into the tech industry. Securing a product management role straight out of college can be challenging, mainly since, historically, many startups only hired PMs once they reached a team size of 35 or 40 employees. However, smaller companies are now beginning to hire PMs earlier in their growth stages as well.

Our organization serves as a valuable resource, focusing on helping aspiring PMs understand the product management interview process. The most common question we receive is what students should study in college to become a product manager. We recommend focusing on computer science and data science, with additional coursework in entrepreneurship and psychology to understand user behavior and enhance technical skills.

As a non-profit volunteer initiative, we started on LinkedIn and have since expanded to include a newsletter. We primarily cater to college students, offering resources and community support. While we have previously held in-person meetings, our resources are now primarily accessible online. Our initiative welcomes anyone interested in product management, and membership is free of charge as we focus on giving back to the community and supporting aspiring product managers in their career journeys.

What trends do you think will most impact the technology industry in the next five years?

For any new tech company, investing in technologies such as AI is essential. Most companies want to work on anything new as fast as possible. It’s a race for innovation. Soon, we will see AI everywhere in our daily lives. For the next few years, it will only help innovation. The government is also investing in AI, underscoring its growing importance. For product managers and young ambitious people in tech, we always want to be working with cutting-edge tech. The goal is to make our lives better and more efficient. Every product manager wants to make their products better. AI tools are making our lives easier, helping us focus on big decision-making rather than menial tasks.

How is AI changing the field for product managers?

As outlined in my op-ed, AI is revolutionizing the day-to-day tasks of product managers, making their jobs easier and allowing them to focus on critical priorities. This new wave of AI will make product managers more crucial than ever. PMs are accountable for making responsible decisions regardless of the product they own, but they also hold the power to shape the future of AI products and, in turn, the future of our world. With great power comes great responsibility, which should make Product Managers feel critical, influential, and responsible for the ethical use of AI in their work. As PMs don’t spend hours writing product requirement documents (PRDs) and can automatically generate analytics dashboards with suggested metrics, they can devote more time to understanding customer needs, developing product vision and strategy, building customer empathy, and leading cross-functional teams.

What’s your ultimate career goal?

My ultimate career goal is to start my own company and lead a team, drawing from my experiences at Microsoft and startups. I aim to continue working in AI, focusing on cutting-edge technologies. I have a strong interest in the travel space and the coffee industry and a passion for healthcare.
I enjoy traveling whenever possible, trekking, and playing and watching soccer. I’m also a massive cinema buff. On Saturdays, I frequently host coffee events in New York City called “Customs,” where I bring friends and network with others to build community. I hope to expand these events into public gatherings in the future.

Hailing from Sweden but making her mark in the heart of New York City, Matilda Ivarsson, along with her partner Yasmine Mansson, co-founded the PR agency STHLM-NYC. Their mission is to facilitate the entry of Swedish entrepreneurs and brands into the bustling U.S. market. As they’re about to triple their client base and revenue by year’s end, the question on everyone’s mind is, how did they achieve this remarkable success while competing with hundreds of well-established New York agencies?

Boasting nearly a decade of experience on both sides of the Atlantic, Matilda’s journey is nothing short of impressive. She served as the Head of Communications for The Museum of Spirits in Stockholm and has collaborated with an array of renowned clients, including industry giants such as L’Oréal, the esteemed 5-star Boston Harbor Hotel, celebrated names like Glendalough Whiskey, and artists of international acclaim, such as David Shrigley and Bertil Vallien. Her portfolio also includes works by iconic artists like Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Frank Bowling. She has notably secured international press coverage for her clients in distinguished publications, such as The Wall Street Journal, Elephant Art Magazine, ARTnews, and more.

Matilda is, as some would describe, “a third culture kid” who has led a life that transcends borders, having called different countries home since the tender age of 4. Fluent in three languages by the age of 7, she pursued her education at Suffolk University in Boston and completed her Master’s in Strategic Communication at Columbia University.

In an exclusive interview, The Urban Watch sat down with Matilda to delve into her unique perspective on the Swedish and New York markets, exploring the nuances of communication in both and uncovering the secret to her newfound success.

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced?

I’ve been privileged to live in many different places around the world, which enriched my experiences and broadened my perspective. However, it has also posed a challenge for me – finding a sense of belonging. I am grateful for the many years I’ve spent in the U.S. and the sense of belonging I feel here.

My dad is an entrepreneur, so we moved around often, crossing continents and countries. I was trilingual by the age of 7. When I was 4, we relocated to Paris for three years. It was challenging to assimilate into the French community. I remember being told that I couldn’t play with a French girl because her father said, “My daughter doesn’t play with immigrants.” Then, we moved to a suburb of Boston for another three years. The town was incredibly welcoming, but it was a small, sheltered community, not particularly fashionable. Later, we moved to a small ski town in Northern Sweden. However, the most challenging move was returning to Stockholm when I was 12. In Stockholm, children grow up faster. Girls used to ask for a Louis Vuitton bag for Christmas because that’s what they carried to school. I am Swedish, but I felt like an outsider in my own country. This kind of lifestyle made me desire constant movement. After high school, I returned to Paris to continue my language education and then to Thailand to volunteer. Then, I earned my Bachelor’s degree at Suffolk University in Boston before returning to Sweden, where I stayed for a few years.

Do you still feel like an outsider in Sweden? Would you like to go back to live there?

I no longer feel like an outsider in Sweden because it has become more international since high school and is much more open. I have developed a much deeper appreciation for Swedish traditions and culture than I had when I was younger. While I will likely be based in New York, where I have found my home, I also want to take a long Christmas break in Sweden and stay there for two months during the summer. Additionally, I have my Swedish community here in New York – I attend a Swedish church and serve on the board of The Swedish Women’s Educational Association in New York (SWEA).

When did you discover your interest in PR, and how did you foster it?

My undergraduate degree is in PR and Marketing. My first job was at 451 Marketing in Boston, and it was there that I realized I had found my calling. It was an incredibly rewarding experience, working alongside some of the best professionals in the business, and I quickly learned how to deliver life-changing results for my clients. I excelled in this field, which allowed me to advance rapidly. The positive feedback from my superiors solidified my belief that this was the right career path for me. Witnessing the impact that PR could have on clients and seeing them shine and their businesses take off inspired me to strive for expertise in this field.

While with the 451 Marketing Hospitality PR Team, we successfully launched Glendalough Whisky in the U.S. through five events in key cities: Boston, New York, Chicago, Atlanta, and Philadelphia. I played a significant role in planning each event from our Boston location and managing the budget. The outcome was full houses at each location and national press features, marking it a major success.

How do PR practices differ between New York and Sweden? Are there any unique challenges or opportunities in each location?

The U.S. is a little more ahead of the curve than Europe. There are lots of new trends and a lot of media activations that weren’t used in Sweden back when I worked in Boston.

In New York, we have more creative freedom. I believe this is due to the city’s diversity and intense competition. In Sweden, PR professionals are more likely to follow the norm –I witnessed that when I worked as Head of Communications at the Museum of Spirits in Sweden. Before, they used to outsource their PR and Events planning, but I brought it in-house. The museum was turning 100 years old, and I was tasked with planning the opening of the exhibition “Champagne!” In my first month there, the CEO gave me a budget and told me to plan a party with one thousand people. I applied everything I had learned in the U.S. to that event.

For example, I wanted to set up a photo booth, which wasn’t a common practice in Sweden in 2017. My boss at first was against the idea, but I ended up convincing her. So, we got a photo booth with fun prompts. When people shared the photos from the booth on social media, it got like 30 thousand impressions in 24 hours – it was a very successful event.

I also secured sponsorship from every possible champagne brand, even those that typically didn’t sponsor.

Sweden is very innovative in tech and fashion, but we are catching up with communications – there’s still a hesitancy to stand out and break away from traditional norms.

Certain marketing activities were obligatory for an exhibition, such as placing advertisements on large light poles. These poles were city-owned and exclusively reserved for cultural institutions. Therefore, a substantial marketing budget was allocated for this purpose rather than social media marketing.

It’s increasingly hard for brands to get press in the U.S. What are some key things a brand needs to get organic media attention?

The nicest compliment I got from my Swedish CEO at the museum was, “She’s relentless but unpretentious.” I have no problem going after reporters time and time again. Research is key because you shouldn’t be pitching the same story to 100 different journalists. You have to get to know the journalist and make sure that whatever you’re pitching perfectly aligns with what they cover.

When pitching, a story is key. It doesn’t have to be as complicated as people think. One thing I’ve learned through a decade in this profession is the simplicity of writing: a simple story with one main point when pitching. The more well-written the pitch is, the better chance it will be published. Give them a headline – it will make their job easier.

In the U.S., there’s a lot of room to fill for journalists. If you can become a trusted partner, give them the stories and the scoops– you essentially do some work for them. Here, journalists get hundreds of emails daily, and it’s all about cutting through that noise.

I’m so excited to say that we have two TV opportunities in the works for our clients. One of them will be featured on CNBC. Our jewelry client also got a feature in Brooklyn Paper.

Podcasts are highly effective for clients with new, complex products. On a podcast, they have more airtime to share their story and explain the product. TV opportunities are more reliant on connections. The choice of medium depends on what you’re pitching.

What’s the accomplishment you’re most proud of?

The accomplishment I’m most proud of is the opening of the exhibition “The Future of Food & Drink” at the Museum of Spirits, which Swedish Prince Carl Philip himself inaugurated. I was responsible for planning and executing the marketing strategy, as well as handling all PR and event coordination for the opening. The exhibition, which premiered in February 2019 at the museum, was the first of its kind. We presented 100 years of food trends in three segments: the past (1950s), present, and future (2050). Examining the impact of food consumption, shipping, and agriculture on the environment, along with the changing trends, was incredibly intriguing. To date, it remains my most successful opening. On the opening day, we received national coverage on “Good Morning News,” TV4 Nyhetsmorgon (Sweden’s equivalent of Good Morning America or the Today Show), in national newspapers like Dagens Industri (Sweden’s equivalent of The New York Times), and on national radio, in addition to hundreds of mentions across various media outlets and social media.

Tell me about how you founded your PR agency STHLM-NYC.

That’s my other biggest accomplishment! We’ve experienced rapid growth and are on track to triple our clients and revenue by the end of 2023. It’s been a whirlwind, but I always had a sense in my mind that I would start my agency; I just thought it would happen when I was around 45, not in my 30s, haha.

Since moving to Sweden, I have been taking on clients for PR projects and kept getting a lot of requests from companies and agencies about freelancing. So this was meant to be. So this was meant to be.

I grew up with an entrepreneur dad and an older brother who now runs a successful SaaS company. I learned a lot from them and was inspired by their journeys.

I met Yasmine, my co-founder, who is also Swedish, here in New York. We both served on the board of SWEA and met in January of this year at my first board meeting. We were both consultants then and realized we shared similar experiences, so we decided to take the leap and start our agency.

How does STHLM-NYC stand out among the many other PR agencies in New York?

There are hundreds of PR agencies in NYC, and it’s hard to compete, so it’s crazy that we’ve grown as fast as we have, but I think it’s because we found a great niche. We specialize in helping Swedish entrepreneurs, brands, and companies enter the U.S. market, with a concentration in New York.

We are very proud and confident of what we offer. Some companies help Swedish companies in NYC, but none help with communications– I realized this when I was working at the Swedish American Chamber of Commerce in NY. It was a great experience that made me realize that I want to work with Swedish brands and people in the U.S. I’ve been in the U.S. for 11 years and have a deep understanding of how things are done here and how I can help Swedish entrepreneurs. And Swedes need to understand that New York is very different from, let’s say, Texas, Florida, and other states. New York comprises thousands of market segments, and one must identify their target audience, understand their demographics, and so on. For instance, does the target customer prefer shopping at Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s?

I’m proud to be Swedish and offer my local expertise in the New York market.

Sweden is always advertised as the happiest country in the world and the most gender equal. But we are not good at talking about ourselves! And in New York, you need to be good at talking about yourself and knowing your worth. That’s where we come in– helping our clients find their voice and tone is very exciting.

We are currently working with some Swedish legacy names like Orrefors & Kosta Boda, a legacy glassware and glass art company. Kosta Boda was founded in 1742 by two governors and former generals from King Charles XII’s army. They’ve been selling in the U.S. for many years as well – places like Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom. However, we are helping them target younger audiences through out-of-the-box social media and guerilla marketing campaigns.

Do you have any American clients?

Yes, we do! We have a couple of American clients, including the jewelry brand Burkindy and Matthew Sawyer’s USAccelerator. Matthew Sawyer is a go-to-market strategist specializing in helping companies launch in the U.S. He recently published his first book, “How to Make It in America,” and we are assisting him with PR.

What are the essential elements that modern brands must possess to distinguish themselves in the market?

They need to have outside-the-box ideas and an open mindset. Ethics are also critical. The terms “PR stunt” or “spin” often have negative connotations because people associate them with putting a positive spin on something negative. For example, when a brand is engaged in “greenwashing” or handling crisis communications poorly.

An authentic brand is crucial. As PR professionals, we often serve as a check for our clients, helping them ensure their authenticity.

At our agency, we have a strong mission. We believe that every human being is brilliant in their own way, and we aim to help their brilliance shine.

Yasmine and I have a strong ability to connect with people, and we require a genuine connection with our clients. If there’s something that doesn’t align or if we don’t believe in what they offer, we won’t take them on as clients. It needs to be a mutually beneficial match.

We research our clients beforehand to ensure that we can fully support what they’re selling. After all, we become their ambassadors and put our reputation on the line.

Transparency is always very important. We need to know if there are any skeletons in the closet because we need to be prepared to handle any crises.

Talk about the pros and cons of working for yourself vs. working for someone else.

When considering the advantages and disadvantages of working for yourself versus working for someone else, there are several key points to remember. When you work for yourself, you have the freedom to explore limitless opportunities and have the power to allocate your time to the most valuable and essential aspects of your job or business. This freedom can also lead to a broader range of creativity, allowing you to express your ideas and concepts uniquely. However, there are challenges, as you must establish a clear vision for your contributions and take the initiative to start your own company, which can be demanding.

Another difference between being employed and running your own business is that you must be closely connected to your passion. In my case, I’ve discovered that my passion isn’t confined to a single industry. So, our client base spans a diverse spectrum, ranging from an exceptionally talented jewelry designer to tech innovators like Howwe Technologies. Our passion is effective and creative communication, no matter what your product or service is.

On the other hand, working for someone else can be an incredibly educational experience, providing you with valuable insights and skills you might not have gained otherwise. I owe much of my knowledge and growth to my work experience, as it has allowed me to learn from successful entrepreneurs and develop a deeper understanding of what it takes to succeed in the business world. However, working for someone else can come with limitations, as you must often follow someone else’s directives and adhere to their established structures. Ultimately, choosing between working for yourself or someone else depends on your goals, ambitions, and preferences.

What are some emerging trends in the PR industry that you have observed in both locations?

I love guerilla marketing campaigns! Guerilla marketing is a strategy marketers use to create hype through word-of-mouth marketing with hopes of going viral. Using unconventional marketing techniques, you do something no one has before. For example, the hit show “The Walking Dead” did a guerilla marketing campaign where actors were made up to look like zombies and placed below a grate in Manhattan’s Union Square. Pedestrians who stepped near or above the grate were met with zombified hands and arms reaching up from the ground below them.

UNICEF did a guerilla marketing stunt before where they put dirty water in vending machines. For a $1 donation to UNICEF’s cause, New Yorkers received a nasty bottle of brown water, as well as some important facts about the water crisis. A $1 donation could provide a child with clean drinking water for 40 days, they said. I also try to implement guerilla marketing when I can.

People today are very tech-savvy, and brands quickly embrace trends, like being among the first to join Clubhouse or Meta’s new platform, Threads. You either become an early adopter or find fun and engaging ways to connect with your customers.

Since COVID-19, people have been yearning for human interaction, even though so much remained online after the pandemic. If brands can play a role in bringing people together, connecting them, and engaging with human emotions, that’s a beautiful thing. Guerrilla marketing will always remain relevant.

In 2018, we organized an exhibition for visual artist David Shrigley at the Museum of Spirits in Sweden. He was the museum’s most significant artist to date. His exhibition featured 12 nine-foot-tall inflatable swan-like sculptures, also available in a smaller format suitable for pools and sold as merchandise. On the opening day, we arrived at the museum at 5 a.m., inflated 12 smaller swans, and placed them in fountains across Stockholm. This allowed people jogging, walking their dogs, or commuting to work in the morning to see these floats throughout the city. If they posted on social media and tagged the artist and the museum, they received free entry to the exhibition. This put a smile on many morning commuters.

Another prominent trend that’s hard to overlook is AI. However, AI cannot replace humans. It can enhance time efficiency and overcome writer’s block, but it cannot compete with the human brain and interaction.

Can you share a challenging client situation and how you resolved it?

One challenging client situation I encountered involved working with a large enterprise tech organization, which was a unique experience for me as I had previously worked with a diverse range of clients but not within such a massive enterprise context. Their forward-thinking approach was so cutting-edge that the public and media had no prior knowledge or established schemas to reference in their communication. This required us to employ a higher degree of innovative and creative language when engaging with the public, as our objective was to usher the stakeholders into an envisioned future seamlessly. To overcome this challenge, we took the initiative to provide stakeholders with a glimpse into the future of technology, bridging the gap between their pioneering ideas and the wider audience’s comprehension. This approach helped us successfully navigate the communication hurdles and maintain a constructive client relationship.

What’s one piece of advice that you’d give to an entrepreneur who wants to bring their business to the U.S.?

If you’re an entrepreneur looking to expand your business to the United States, there’s a critical piece of advice I would offer: thorough research and preparedness. The U.S. market is incredibly diverse, encompassing various cultures and regions, each with unique preferences and nuances. Recognize that successful entry into this market may require different strategies depending on whether you target a specific market segment or a geographic location. The potential for growth in the U.S. is immense, with a vast and dynamic business landscape that is highly competitive and entrepreneurial-friendly. With the right approach, the sky is truly the limit, but it’s essential to approach your expansion with a well-informed and adaptable strategy to make the most of this opportunity.

What advice do you have for aspiring PR professionals?

For those aspiring to a career in public relations, several key pieces of advice can pave the way for success. Firstly, prioritize networking, as your connections can be invaluable in this field. Maintain a dynamic and growing network of industry professionals, ensuring it remains fresh and relevant to your goals. Additionally, never underestimate the power of your writing skills. Continuous practice and improvement in writing are essential, as it’s a core component of PR work. Furthermore, don’t neglect the importance of reading. Staying well-informed and up-to-date with current events, trends, and industry news is crucial for effectively navigating the ever-evolving world of public relations.

Future plans and dreams?

Given the significant growth we’ve experienced, we are on track to triple our revenue in 2023, and we’re optimistic about expanding across the Atlantic soon. We plan to open a second office in Sweden, as we have received inquiries from American organizations seeking assistance expanding to Scandinavia.

Kendall Jenner engaged in a candid fireside chat with Moira Forbes, Forbes’ Executive Vice President, at the Forbes 30 Under 30 Summit held in Cleveland, Ohio today. The conversation delved into her journey from a successful model to a burgeoning mogul, thanks to her award-winning 818 Tequila brand.

At the age of 27, Jenner is currently navigating the realm of self-discovery, both personally and spiritually. Hailing from the Kardashian clan, one of the most prominent families in the media spotlight, Jenner is known for being the most private among them.

When asked if she ever feels misunderstood by the media, Jenner candidly responded, “Always. I genuinely treasure my privacy, and I find the most happiness in my most private moments.” However, she also acknowledged that “Privacy leaves more room for narratives to be created that are not true.”

One of the fastest ways for Jenner to feel emotionally weighed down is by spending too much time on her phone, scrolling through social media, and perusing the internet. She frequently encounters misinformation about herself that is far from the truth. Jenner explained, “I’m an authentic, straightforward person, and I’m self-aware with great character.” So when she sees unfounded rumors about her, it can be upsetting. Nevertheless, she has learned to cope with such situations by reminding herself that “what you see on the internet is not worth your attention.”

Jenner actively prioritizes her mental health and practices self-affirmation daily. She emphasizes the importance of grounding oneself, even in small ways, such as stepping outside and feeling the earth beneath your bare feet.

Offering advice to everyone, Jenner encourages individuals to find a hobby they love, something that can help them disconnect from their phones and work. For her, that passion is horse riding, which she describes as having “ignited so much joy” in her life.

Considering the media’s frequent misinterpretation of her, Jenner was asked how she’d like to be perceived by others. Her response was simple: “Just as a human being, constantly learning and trying to do my best. I always aim to leave a positive impact on everyone I encounter.”

Transitioning from a successful modeling career to entrepreneurship was a significant step for Jenner, who has been modeling for a decade. She stressed the importance of intentionality, recalling that at the age of 16, she made a deliberate decision to pursue modeling and dedicated herself to that path. Years later, she followed her family’s footsteps into entrepreneurship, always keeping the core values of her brand at the forefront.

One of the central tenets of the 818 brand is sustainability. Their distillery operates on biomass and solar power, reducing their reliance on fossil fuels and minimizing their carbon footprint. Additionally, 818 partners with “1% for the Planet” partner S.A.C.R.E.D. in Jalisco to transform agave byproducts into adobe bricks used in local communities.

Proudly, Jenner shared, “We have several ongoing projects, including a recently completed library that focuses on sustainable agriculture. We are genuinely proud of the progress we’ve made,” she said, earning applause from the audience.

A week ago, 818’s Instagram announced the inauguration of the library, built by S.A.C.R.E.D., a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of rural Mexican communities where heritage agave spirits are produced. The library is set to open with a collection of 1,300 books.

Government policies and infrastructure play a pivotal role in fostering a thriving startup scene in major cities. Government policies, such as tax incentives, grants, and funding opportunities, directly encourage startup growth by reducing financial burdens and providing essential capital. Moreover, the government often facilitates programs that offer mentorship, training, and networking opportunities for budding entrepreneurs. On the other hand, solid infrastructure, including reliable transport, robust internet connectivity, and accessible office spaces, creates a conducive environment for startups to operate efficiently. In essence, both government support and sound infrastructure are key to nurturing a vibrant startup ecosystem in big cities.

The Impact of the Startup Scene on the Local Economy and Job Market

The startup scene significantly boosts the local economy and job market in major cities. New companies create fresh job opportunities, reducing unemployment rates and fostering economic growth. They stimulate competition and innovation, driving existing businesses to improve their offerings. Startups often attract investors and venture capitalists to the cities, bringing in additional financial resources. Moreover, the need for various supporting services like legal, accounting, and marketing further expands job creation. Thus, the thriving startup scene plays a crucial role in shaping a vibrant, resilient, and diverse local economy.

Future Trends and Predictions for the Global Startup Scene.

Looking ahead, the global startup scene is set to continue its rapid growth, driven by technological innovation and increased accessibility to funding. Major cities worldwide are predicted to expand their startup ecosystems, with emerging markets like Asia and Africa expected to rise significantly. Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Blockchain are expected to remain hot trends, spearheading the tech startup scene. The growing focus on sustainability will likely spur a surge in green and social entrepreneurship. Remote work’s normalization may also decentralize startup hubs, allowing entrepreneurs to thrive outside traditional hotspots like Silicon Valley. Despite potential challenges, the future of the global startup scene looks promising, marked by diversity, innovation, and global collaboration.

After many long winter months of swimwear brands sliding into my DMs on Instagram to model for them or feature them, only one caught my eye—Veranera—an e-commerce site and marketing platform that sells luxury Colombian swimwear.

One of the reasons why Veranera stands out from other swimwear companies is that it uses these three very high standards when picking which brands to sell: social responsibility, quality and design. All of the brands that they represent have a social responsibility project. One of them, Airavata, employs women who are in prison in Medellin, Colombia, to do the art of embroidery on the swimwear. The women get paid and are even able to support their families. Designer of Airavata Carolina Ganan went through a long and difficult bureaucratic process to be able to employ women in prison.

So to hear how Veranera came about directly from its founder Laura Velasquez, on a sunny day in May, I head to the Wing Soho, a co-working space for women. I almost walk past the entrance of the space because it only has a tiny sign “The Wing” on the door. Once I take the elevator to the fifth floor, a sunlit oasis for women opens up. Sitting on a plush armchair, I wait for Laura, observing the decor: the plants and all of the paintings hanging on the walls. Many women walk back and forth—each one of them more stunning and stylish than the other. Is there a dress code for “cool” here?

Finally, Laura comes out to meet me—a petite woman with shiny long brown hair, wearing a striped shirt and white jeans. She gives me a warm hug and smiles with her commercial-worthy white smile.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="4111" data-permalink="https://theurbanwatch.com/fashion/colombians-near-death-experience-led-launch-swimwear-brand/attachment/gupta_v_veranera_5/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/theurbanwatch.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Gupta_V_veranera_5.jpg?fit=1335%2C2000&ssl=1" data-orig-size="1335,2000" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"2.5","credit":"Vedant Gupta","camera":"NIKON D800","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1558450235","copyright":"\u00a9VedantGupta","focal_length":"50","iso":"500","shutter_speed":"0.0025","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="Gupta_V_veranera_5" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>Laura Velasquez, founder of Veranera Swimwear. Photo: Vedant Gupta for The Urban Watch

I notice a neon sign “No Man’s Land” by the bathroom and think of my photographer, who’s running late and who’s going to be one of the only men in this space. But in a world where women still make barely 81 cents for every dollar a man working full-time earns, and where it’s mostly men holding CEO titles—it’s okay for a man to feel a little bit uncomfortable, surrounded by all the self-funded business women. Laura takes me to a communal table and I meet her intern Tamara, who’s also Colombian. When Vedant, the photographer, arrives, he points out that it’s funny the three of us are wearing stripes. We didn’t even notice that before and chuckle. After checking out the conference rooms, we decide on a sunlit corner with couches for the interview.

Laura is camera shy and talks about herself with humility. She is originally from the coffee region of Colombia and was raised in the city of Pereira. When she was 18 years old, she moved to New Jersey to become proficient in English in order to attend college. She went to University of North Carolina at Charlotte and earned a dual degree in International Business & Finance. While still in college, she was recruited by Bank of America, where she worked until 2016. She left the bank looking for a career and lifestyle change and went on a Euro trip.

At first sight, no one can tell that behind Laura’s smile hides a lot of trauma. In Mykonos, Greece, she had a terrible accident and was airlifted to the hospital and then flown to the U.S. on a flatbed. She endured seven surgeries in seven months and had to learn how to walk again.

In December of that year, Laura was supposed to get married—she never canceled the wedding. “The doctor said I might not be able to walk down the aisle,” she says, “He even told me—don’t drink champagne because you’re probably going to pass out.” But she was determined and walked down that aisle just fine.

In October, her friend was getting married in the Caribbean. That was the first time she traveled since the accident. Only then Laura realized she wouldn’t be able to wear bikinis that she loved so much because the accident left her with a huge scar on her hip. “Determined to get my old life back, I made it my mission to find the perfect one-piece that would make me feel as beautiful and confident as bikinis once did,” Laura says.

After an arduous search, she finally found one at a boutique in New York City—a red one-piece that fit her perfectly. She checked the tag and to her surprise, discovered that it was a Colombian brand, called Peixoto. Laura remember this moment as the light-bulb moment for Veranera Swimwear, and now they sell Peixoto, too.

Colombian swimwear is very recognized within the country, but not in the U.S. Laura realized there was space in the American market to capitalize on by creating an e-commerce platform that sells Colombian designers’ swimwear. Given how difficult it was for her to find a swimsuit in the middle of October in New York City, she later surveyed many women and found out they had the same problem. Veranera could solve it. Selling a variety of stylish one-pieces was also really important to Laura so that women could cover whatever they wanted to cover. At the time, one-piece swimsuits weren’t that popular, but in the last couple of years they’ve become a hot trend.

It’s hard not to notice all of these new shiny swimwear brands popping up on Instagram or pictures of model Emily Ratajkowski wearing her brand Inamorata’s bikinis. The swimwear market has been growing at a moderate pace since 2010 and in 2019 is worth over 20 billion dollars globally. The idea that “every body is a beach body” is becoming much more embraced and it’s a great thing for a more inclusive swimwear market.

According to Edited’s data, there are many factors driving the growth, such as increased participation in exercise, growing emerging markets like China and India and a boom in air travel. Even a festival like Coachella has an influence on the market because many influencers there just wear a one-piece swimsuit or a bikini as a top (you can also wear a one-piece as a bodysuit for yoga).

But it’s the global luxury e-commerce retailers that add to the growth of the swimwear market the most. Their customers span the planet, including loyal Chinese markets, and travel frequently. Farfetch has increased its women’s swim offering by 349 percent and Matches by 288 percent. On average, a luxury swimsuit costs around $300 and keeping an affordable luxury price point is important. The most expensive swimsuit right now on Veranera’s website is Airavata’s for $245.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="4120" data-permalink="https://theurbanwatch.com/fashion/colombians-near-death-experience-led-launch-swimwear-brand/attachment/veranera-swimwear-2/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/theurbanwatch.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/veranera-swimwear-2.jpg?fit=2000%2C3020&ssl=1" data-orig-size="2000,3020" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="veranera swimwear 2" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>Airavata Usuzumi bikini</p>

Veranera sells swimwear from 11 brands, but they’re going to narrow it down to smaller and up-and-coming designers while adding 100 percent Colombian made jewelry. By representing Colombian designers, Veranera wants to bring more awareness to Colombian swimwear. “When people think about swimwear, I want them to think about Colombia,” Laura says.

She is so passionate about what she does that she could talk about it for hours. Only after we are done recording the interview, she remembers to mention that she’s considering getting a Master’s degree in fashion and launching her own swimwear line.

Laura reminds us that there’s no shame in quitting and starting over. She was a banker once, working crazy hours and making a lot of money, but numbers didn’t bring her joy. Now she’s making an impact in the Colombian communities.

“My favorite part of running this business is knowing that even on a small scale we are helping Colombian talent share their artistry with international markets while bringing a little piece of happiness to our customers,” she says.

Sandra Manay is an artist and entrepreneur. Some might think that these two things are polar opposites, but starting a business is an art form in itself.

Sandra was born in the coastal area of Peru in 1992 and at a young age was influenced by local traditional art and natural beauty. That led her to find love for fashion and design. At the age of 15, she moved to the U.S. with her family, and later she graduated from one of the best design colleges in the world—Parsons in New York City.

Since she was 12-years-old, she had a dream to open an e-commerce clothing store, so right after graduating from Parsons she started working toward her dream. She failed. Nonetheless, Sandra picked herself up and successfully created an aromatherapy company Luna Sundara.

Her advice for young entrepreneurs? “Let yourself fail at a young age, but don’t be too hard on yourself,” she said.

How did you decide to create an aromatherapy company? Are you now working full-time on it?

Actually, I’ve always wanted to create an e-commerce clothing store—that has been my dream since I was 12-years-old—so when I finished college I felt I was ready to do it.

I created a clothing line called “Bohemian Affair,” which consisted of high-end bohemian fashion (I still have the pieces; they are beautiful I wish I could produce more of them). I did everything needed to create a clothing line, but I never launched it. There were many reasons behind it—the most important one being lack of experience. There was so much I needed to learn and after I talked to some mentors, I realized that there were many aspects that I was still missing. I learned my lesson, it was hurtful, but hey, you move on! Still, there’s something about e-commerce that gives me great pleasure: creating new products, seeing people using them.

During the spring of 2014, I started attending spiritual events, full moon parties, summer equinox among others, and I saw a lot of people using aromatherapy. There were certain aromas that I couldn’t find in the U.S that are popular in Peru. One day I was chatting with my boyfriend Tom, and we said let’s create an aromatherapy store and see what happens. We thought it would be awesome to have an unlimited supply of our favorite products. I work full time on it.

Who are your customers?

Our customers consist of 68 percent women and 32 percent men. Our buyers range from different ages; however, the most popular group are those that are 25-34 years old.

How is the company different from all the others in the U.S.? What’s unique about it?

We focus on Peruvian products since we have enough resources that allow us to be familiar with them. Selling products from markets we don’t personally know won’t allow us to have the connection we have with suppliers, farmers, biologists (for the oils) and artisans. For aromatherapy, we focus on wild crafted botanicals and for the ceramics, we focus on traditional Peruvian ceramics.

You said since last year sales on your site tripled, and increased by 890 percent on Amazon, and now you’re profitable. What was the driving the factor behind the success?

I believe right timing and customer satisfaction are the main factors behind our success. When we started, there were companies selling aromatherapy products, but our goal was to present it better. We haven’t seen many companies selling the kind of oils we sell because people are unfamiliar with them. We want to create a better shopping experience. If customers are not satisfied with their purchase, we make sure we do everything in our power to make them happy. Also, we believe success can be temporary, so we are working on expanding to new products, especially those that aren’t in the market yet.

How do you define “success”?

Success to me is simply having a peace of mind, but money comes with it. If used properly, money can ease things and minimize problems. It also allows us to do good for others, and that’s the biggest gratification an entrepreneur can have.

What is it like when Thomas Konik is not only your business partner, but also your boyfriend? What are the pros and cons?

Working with my boyfriend is great, however, I would be lying if I told you that it has always been like that. For starters, he has another job—he is an audio visual consultant for a hospital—so his full time job is completely different from what he does at Luna Sundara. The pros of working with him is that we are more connected, we share ideas every day, and we celebrate every milestone. It creates a different connection and it’s very special. We grow together professionally and we learn from each other.

There are also cons of working with him and I’ve been affected by them more than him, probably. Criticism is a big issue when it comes to working with your partner. I appreciate constructive criticism when it comes from other people and I’m grateful for their time to help me. But when it comes to receiving criticism from your partner, it gets complicated. I’ve had a hard time detaching myself emotionally… however, I’m growing professionally and learning how to find balance.

What is your dream job?

I would love to have a lifestyle e-commerce store that includes aromatherapy, beauty, wellness, home décor, and fashion. I love aromatherapy, but I’m also passionate about art.

Also, creating an organization that can change lives of children through education has been a dream I’ve had for many years. There are children with bright minds, but lack of resources that are living in underdeveloped nations.

We’ve been talking about creating an NGO to help with education in Peru, but it’s a long term project. We are planning to put together a team of economists, managers and marketing consultants. We already have a team in mind and we’ve been discussing ideas for the past few months. We don’t want to be yet another company donating money and delivering no long term results—we want to do it right, and that takes time, but with patience it will be successful.

How is the company going to grow?

In the future, we want to expand into different categories such as teas, natural supplements, more artisanal products, fashion, home décor, and beauty products. I understand that now it will be hard to picture it since we only sell aromatherapy, but we have a future plan for Luna and we are positive it will come together just fine.

We also want to expand our blog and educate people more on different topics that are unfamiliar. Bringing new products will be a bit challenging since there are products that are not well established. For example, the palo santo was popular already, but people were not familiar with oils like muña or palo de rosa. Our job is to educate people more on the topic so they can understand the value of the product they are purchasing.

How frequently do you travel to Peru or Ecuador for business? You said you work with a biologist in Peru, who harvests the botanicals and produces the oils, and with suppliers in the most remote areas. Can you tell us about the relationship with those people and their way of life?

I usually travel two to three times a year. I work with a biologist in Peru that distills our wild crafted oils. She is very passionate about the environment and takes her time to help us with everything we need. We get lots of emails from wholesalers offering us oils, but they have no idea what they are selling. Our supplier is very professional, we’ve created a great relationship, and we wouldn’t change that for anything.

Our ceramists are in a small town in Northern Peru. It usually takes us a few hours to get to their homes, but it’s the best place to create a closer relationship with them. The ceramists live in a small village and usually when we place a big order they get the whole town to work, they help each other, and that brings a great pleasure to us because everyone is happy in the end.

I want to explain something that has been on my mind since we started. A lot of people reached out to us asking about our business model and also asking if we are a social entrepreneurship company.

We don’t call our company “social entrepreneurship” because we are not there yet. However, other companies of our kind do because they simply purchase products from artisans or small artists. To me, that’s a marketing strategy more than an honest explanation of their business model. Social entrepreneurship is the use of the techniques by start-up companies and entrepreneurs to develop, fund and implement solutions to social, cultural, or environmental issues.

There are many companies that are very transparent about their business model implementing social entrepreneurship. I admire the ones that are currently doing this kind of hard and thoughtful work. However, since being a social entrepreneurship company attracts a different market, many companies use this term to their advantage even though they are not fully operating as a social entrepreneurship company would. Buying products from artisans, villagers or small artists doesn’t automatically give you the title of social entrepreneurship.

You may be asking yourself, so why do you criticize these companies and you are not doing it? The answer is simple—it takes time. Most importantly, we want to show results to our consumers. We don’t want to do things and not be able to show the difference our company is making, we want to show it with results and statistics.

We buy products from artisans, but also allow them to sell to other people, and we are currently working on ways to work with their local governments to create a program to teach them how to create products with an export quality. We wouldn’t want the artisans to depend solely on us because they can lose everything if we ever stop purchasing products from them. We want to train them to improve their products, improve their quality of life, and prepare them to become better entrepreneurs. We want to make things right, but we are also very cautious of how we portray ourselves. We want to be as transparent as possible with our business practices.

You graduated from Parsons, are you thinking about someday going back to work in the fashion industry?

My goal would be, as I mentioned before, to create a lifestyle company where I can create a platform for different products, including fashion. Entering the fashion industry is not easy and it requires experience. Every day I see companies opening and closing. I would be happy having a store where I can have different categories such as aromatherapy, home décor, furniture, wellness but all with the same free spirited style.

Any advice for young entrepreneurs?

Let yourself fail at a young age, but don’t be too hard on yourself. Right out of college, I started working towards “Bohemian Affair” and worked for a long time to create a company that I’ve been dreaming for many years only to realize I was unaware of many factors. I remember thinking how ignorant I was all these years and how risky I was to do it right out of college without working for someone first. It was hurtful, I was angry, sad, and disappointed in myself. I’ve come to a point where failure is not scary anymore, I’m willing to accept it and if I fail again at another project, I’ll know it’s a lesson no one will be able to take away from me. I’ll pick myself up and start over.

Anything else?

Be kind to people, always. Being an entrepreneur will take you on many roads—one day you could be on top and the next you’ll be asking someone for work. Life is very unexpected, but people will remember you for the good you did and the impact you had on their life.

Photo: Courtesy of @kateuns

The majority of us humans have whimsical ideas and dreams. For the most part, our most extravagant thoughts will remain as just that— thoughts. Occasionally our thoughts evolve into adventures and successes. For some, the dreams take root and blossom into something truly unimaginable.

The wizard of one such dream is Miss Kate Unsworth. At the tender age of 28, Kate is the brain behind a brand, CEO and Founder of Kovert Designs. Kovert began in name before becoming so in nature. Despite being in its fledgling stages, Kate declared her fearless and unconventional style by changing her brand name, ever so coolly, and emerging stronger and grittier with Vinaya.

If you read up on the former model and DJ turned geek and scholastic wiz kid, you could easily think of Kate as a privileged or unappealing character, but neither is remotely true.

Having grown up in Cheshire’s affluent Hale, Kate could have fallen into a stereotypical life or followed many a well-trodden path, but that isn’t in the bones of an Unsworth. In the 17 years that I have known Kate, not one of the roads she has taken has been remotely predictable. Kate is a baffling collision of minds and worlds. At 13, the effortless beauty was an avid audiophile, weirdly as happy tinkering with electronics as jamming to a little funk. Whilst the teenage angst and peer pressure was worming its way into the world around her, her head remained, very firmly, on her shoulders.

Having lived more than enough lives already, Kate gained a Degree in Mathematics and Statistics and Masters in Economics and Econometrics from Edinburgh University and went out into the world brimming with ideas and inventions that could harness and challenge her creative and analytical mind.

Going from student life to start-up to CEO must have been a truly intimidating and incapacitating prospect, but, from the chaotic concept stages to the official launch of Vinaya, the fledgling founder barely took a breath.

These days Kate’s world has taken a positively stratospheric turn. Not only has Vinaya evolved into research and design house, VINAYA, but it has become a hub for research and innovation.

Vinaya is ever evolving and exploring the intersection of neuroscience, philosophy, psychology, mindfulness and modern technology. While we, mere mortals, are wrapping our heads around a new fashion hybrid; “scientific and savvy,” Kate has assembled a crack team of likeminded and inventive nerds who are striving to research, develop and deliver ground breaking creative conceptions.

“We should all learn to switch off – but for many people, that’s an impossible dream.”

If you’re not familiar with the feeling of reaching for your smartphone or browsing the social networks simply out of habit, then you’re probably in the wrong place. For those that are, that incredible urge can be explained – in a rather frightening way – because it’s something we’ve become anatomically programmed to do.

In November 2015, Vinaya unleashed its first product, Altruis. In a world where functionality and fashion remain separate and where staunch traditionalists cling to their “offline” personas, Altruis has been designed to be as beautiful as it is smart. The Altruis Collection grew from the roots of its creator, every fragile detail is a reaction or expression of the founder’s journey. Fashion to function. The bespoke and cutting edge micro-electronics (developed in house by the Vinaya team) allow you to take a step away from your gadgets and gismos, cut out the noise and allow your life to happen.

Kate is refreshingly contradictory when it comes to the tech world. Despite being a self-confessed “offline die-hard” and exceptionally savvy champion of “digital detoxification,” Kate remains constantly conscious and literate when it comes to social, fashion and digital innovations. When asked how she planned to facilitate the intersection between the fashion and technology industries, Kate broke the complex issue down effortlessly— “I would describe us as a fashion brand, but a tech company.”

As a virtually illiterate human (no pun intended), my mind boggles at the complexities of Vinaya. The culture of constant interaction seems unnatural to me, and, to most, I’m an infuriating Luddite and lost cause, but for wiz kid Kate, I am a quirk worth indulging.

The CEO recently disabled the Twitter and Facebook apps on her mobile phone. The move was not a defiant F**k you to the technology world, but a first person experiment into using tech to disconnect. Back online and thrust into the tech world with a million ideas, Kate realized the fatal flaw in wearables, “the technology industry has no background in creating things that people want to wear. At Kovert, we build things that are aesthetically beautiful, focusing on design first and technology second.”

The desire to opt out of gadgetry is a talking point across all industries, some see it as a backlash to the “fear of missing out,” others as a belief in “joy of missing out.” Personally, I view it as a release from the bombardment of noise and clutter that is streamed into my life via a million different machines. Kate’s brain child promises “smart jewellery that gives its owners respite from the compulsive use of smartphones.”

The future of Vinaya and it extraordinary founder is undoubtedly unimaginable to my technophobe brain, but I will be fascinated and curious every step of the way.

Carolyn Blair is the millennial CEO behind Cobbler Concierge, an on demand leather goods repair service that allows users to schedule pickup and delivery from their phone. With Cobbler Concierge, Blair marries the craftsmanship of custom repair services with technology, offering quality shoe repair that can be accessible from anywhere across the country.

“We created Cobbler Concierge to offer consumers, like myself, access to a simple to use, high-quality shoe repair service for getting luxury shoes and leather goods repaired, looking as good as new, and delivered to their front door,” Carolyn Blair said.

Using Cobbler Concierge is simple. First, take a picture of worn shoes (or a bag) with your phone, text the picture and a brief description to SHOES (74637) or place an order online. Next, Cobbler Concierge will send a box to your home with a prepaid label to return damaged items to Cobbler Concierge’s New York headquarters. Once the repairs are completed, Cobbler Concierge will ship your repaired shoes to your doorstep within 7 to 10 days. Repair prices vary according to amount of care needed, with men’s shoes starting at $40 a pair, women’s shoes starting at $15 a pair, and handbags starting at $30 per bag.

“The fact of the matter is that we work with shoes and bags – which are pretty common across all households,” Blair said. “It was a matter of saying, do you have a pair of shoes you love but are nearly ruined? Or, what about that handbag you wear everyday, does that need a new strap? We tend to attract so many different people – from bag collectors to women who treat their heels like a piece of art, to men who will wear their favorite loafers until the soles fall off. It doesn’t matter the label or the profile of the client – our cobblers work with your accessories as if they were their own.”

Blair has plans to continue to build Cobbler Concierge, taking in the lessons she has learned over the first year and a half in business.

“The biggest lesson we learned over the past year is that we should no longer set limits on what we ‘do,’” Blair said. “In fact, we started with shoe and handbag repair for consumers, and we’ve expanded that into special business-to-business opportunities with designer brands that share in our value of quality craftsmanship. We’ve also struck up a partnership with Parson’s School of Design, collaborating with select designers for the final fashion show. In the coming months, we’ll be moving into custom services, growing our at-home product offering and developing our brand presence across social channels.”

“Building the Cobbler Concierge brand and team has been both exciting, and challenging, and I’m excited for the future,” Blair said. “Our first year brought so many opportunities. Now, we’re in a position to develop and nurture strong partnerships as we continue to grow.”

The olidtory dates back to 2011 when digital era was not yet at its exponential growth and “startups” was a word used only by a few entrepreneurs, Elon Musk and Richard Branson amongst them.

Nikolaus Häring (25) and Muezz Vestin (27) are the founders of the recenly launched sportswear & fitness brand SOLID GRIT. Their current Kickstarter campaign was funded in less than 15 days and their apparel is widely sought after on social media.

The Urban Watch Magazine talks to two young and zealous men about how their entrepreneurial journey started, trying to get a grasp of what it takes to start a new brand and propose an empowering message to the customers.

What is the goal of SOLID GRIT and why did you begin this entrepreneurial journey in the first place?

Nikolaus: We’ve both been into healthy lifestyle & sports for more than 10 years and that mutual passion made us think of sharing it with a bigger audience. At first, we thought only about the message – we did not really think about the product or sales. It was all about the idea of helping people feel strong: both physically and emotionally. SOLID GRIT is an original brand for fitness with a sleek and personal touch, but there’s definitely more to it.

Muezz: The fact that our brand is perceived in many ways gives us the fuel to continue: amongst our customers are the professional fighters and sportspeople, yet at the same time we have bloggers and ordinary people into healthy lifestyle buying into our brand.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="1918" data-permalink="https://theurbanwatch.com/city-personas/solid-grit-kickstarter/attachment/img_8364sdssd-2/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/theurbanwatch.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/IMG_8364sdssd-1.jpg?fit=640%2C640&ssl=1" data-orig-size="640,640" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"2.2","credit":"","camera":"iPhone 6s","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1473535043","copyright":"","focal_length":"4.15","iso":"25","shutter_speed":"0.01","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="Kickstarter solid grit campaign founders" data-image-description="<p>Solid Grid is a sportswear startup who successfully funded their Kickstarter campaign during the first 15 days</p>

How do you think you are different that other brands trying to find their gap in the market?

Muezz: We are firm believers in quality and product arributes and we take those things seriously. We produce all of our merchandise in continental Europe and we make sure that the customer feels good while pursuing the active lifestyle.

Nikolaus: Our product functionality beats the biggest retailers in many regards: we make our products extremely durable, use rugged and sleek materials and ensure that compression and durability standards exceed the limits. Besides, the exceptional design does catch the eye.

What makes your Kickstarter campaign successful? What advice can you give to those who are planning to spread the message on platforms like Indiegogo or Kickstarter?

Nikolaus: Make sure your brand tells a story, be ready to prove that your product is functional, trustworthy and, most importantly, keep your promises to the customers.

Muezz: I think it’s also essential to give people access to founders of the brand. People want to support brands, but they want to know about people behind them and whether the unique concept truly comes from their hearts.

What advice would you give to young entrepreneurs starting out?

Nikolaus: Be brave and bold, but wisely evaluate the risks and challenges. It always looks easier when you are planning things out, yet in reality there’s competition and the markets that always show the real value of your brand and startup.

Muezz: I would say that you have to always think from the customer point of view and solve his pains and needs. Otherwise, it becomes personal where it has to be global.

What are the next steps for SOLID GRIT?

SOLID GRIT will expand to physical stores in London, Berlin and Barcelona as well as digital spaces and we will be working on #CharacterOfStrength campaign. We want to spread the coherent message and successfully collaborate with sports activities representatives.
