There’s a lot of reporting to do on the problems in the fashion industry that have persisted for decades. Other industries are covered by pools of reporters, but the fashion industry lacks some real journalists. Sure, writing about clothing and trends is cool, but we need to go deeper. Only after the Harvey Weinstein scandal, sexual assault in the industry became more openly discussed, resulting in firings of many famous fashion photographers and opening the doors for new talent — like Tyler Mitchell. Models continue to not get paid on time, they’re almost expected to change in front of everyone backstage, often in places visible by photographers. We need to do a lot of work as journalists, covering the fashion industry. Let’s start now.
I’m interested in all kinds of collaborations: I want to hear from you if you work in the fashion industry and want to speak up (either anonymously or not), I want to collaborate with other established or student journalists (hey, fellow Columbia Journalism alums or current students!), and or other publications. Also, if you have anyone in mind, please recommend change makers in the industry that we should feature.
Thank you and I’m looking forward to hearing from you!
